Racism, ignorance, and social exclusion continue to persist as some of the most entrenched systemic challenges First Nations peoples face in accessing and realising true Justice, when compared to other people in Australia. Cultural safety continues to be regarded as emerging discourse for most legal actors across the Continent. Even though most judicial officers are aware of cultural differences, the significance of Cultural Intelligence (CQ) and Culturally Principled Practice (CPP) and the application of First Nations specific Cultural Safety Principles (CSF) are less well recognised and rarely operationalised or advocated. This workshop will review the socio-political (and social) differences which exist between mainstream Justice systems and First Nations contemporary realities; while seeking to apply a Culturally Principled approach in achieving accurate advocacy, raise Judicial awareness and achieve true and equitable justice for First Nations peoples (in whatever capacity they find themselves as consumers of Justice Services).
Attendees to this workshop will learn how to:

In Indigenous communities, homelessness remains a pervasive issue with far-reaching consequences. This challenge is aggravated by multiple factors including income inequality, social exclusion, poverty and substance abuse. Importantly, it’s not a standalone issue; there exists a direct link between homelessness, domestic violence and involvement with the criminal justice system. This dynamic workshop is designed to equip participants with practical strategies to combat homelessness and its cascading effects on domestic violence, ultimately intersecting with the criminal justice system.
